Taxonomy

The species was first described by Rambur as Cimex purpureomarginatus . The genus Brachynema includes four Palearctic species, all of which are more or less bound to salt plants . Brachynema purpureomarginatum is a polymorphic species with variable colors. The following subspecies are distinguished according to color characteristics:

  • Brachynema purpureomarginatum hypocrita Puton , 1887 - in the Maghreb (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia)
  • Brachynema purpureomarginatum kerzhneri Ribes & Pagola-Carte , 2007 - in Iran
  • Brachynema purpureomarginatum purpureomarginatum ( Rambur , 1839) - in Southern France, Portugal, Spain
  • Brachynema purpureomarginatum triguttatum fever , 1870 - in southeastern Spain
