history

The Brainlab group was founded in Munich in 1989. The first system was used in 1990 at the University of Vienna . The first sale could not be made until 1993. Things picked up quickly and 18 offices were opened in key markets around the world. With more than 5,000 systems installed in around 80 countries, Brainlab is now among the market leaders for image-based technologies. The IPO, which has been suggested several times, has not yet been implemented. Sales in the low three-digit million range have increased continuously in recent years, and the company was able to be brought into profitability in 2009 and 2010.

In 2001, the company's CEO, Stefan Vilsmeier, received the title of Entrepreneur of the Year in Germany in the information technology category of the Ernst & Young Group. In 2002 he was named World Entrepreneur of the Year in the global finals. At the age of 32 he also received the Bavarian Order of Merit for his special services .

In mid-2006 the company moved to its new headquarters in Feldkirchen (near Munich) .

At the end of 2016, the new headquarters in Munich-Riem , which also includes the listed airport tower, was moved into; the building was planned by Kadawittfeldarchitektur . Chancellor Angela Merkel also attended the opening .

Products

Brainlab is first and foremost a software company. Managing Director Stefan Vilsmeier developed the first software that came onto the market in 1990 to improve the use of medical imaging in the operating room. Brainlab sells solutions for applications in oncology, in surgery as well as in medical imaging and cloud-based image transmission. The main source of income is a software-based navigation system for brain surgery. The company also sells hardware for use in radiation therapy and radiosurgery.
