The nature reserve is part of an on- site training area of the Bundeswehr with an area of 224.9 hectares. Primarily for the Training Center for Land Systems Technology (ents). Entering during the practice times is prohibited, outside of the practice times you do so at your own risk, although leaving the paved paths is prohibited. Approximately in the middle are two small open land areas with wet poor pastures and calluna heaths with pipe grass . At the edge there is a small area with heavy metal lawns and calamine particles . Large areas of the Brander Forest are covered with spruce and mixed pine forests and partly with red oak . The source brooks of the Brander Forest with the accompanying, often springy stream floodplain forests are also valuable in terms of nature conservation. Due to the occurrence of smooth snakes , the nature reserve is of international importance, also as a stepping stone biotope for the regional biotope network.
