Brando Benifei (born January 1, 1986 in La Spezia ) is an Italian politician of the Partito Democratico . He has been a member of the European Parliament since 2014 .

Life

Benifei began his political commitment at the age of 14 with the Sinistra Giovanile (Young Left), youth organization of the Democratici di Sinistra (DS; Left Democrats). He studied law at the University of Bologna with an Erasmus semester in London. Through the merger of the DS with other center-left parties in 2007, he became a member of the Partito Democratico (PD) and the youth organization Giovani Democratici (Young Democrats), whose provincial association La Spezia he coordinated. In addition, in 2009 he was elected deputy chairman of the European socialist youth association ECOSY . In September 2009 he moved up to the La Spezia Provincial Council, of which he was a member until October 2014. In 2010 he was elected to the board of the Giovani Democratici, where he was responsible for Europe and foreign policy.

In the 2014 European elections he was elected to the European Parliament as a member of the constituency of Northwest Italy . There he sits in the parliamentary group of the Progressive Alliance of Social Democrats (S&D). In the 2014–19 legislative period he was a member of the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs and a delegate in the committees for parliamentary cooperation between the EU and Kazakhstan, EU and Kyrgyzstan, EU-Uzbekistan and EU-Tajikistan, and for relations with Turkmenistan and Mongolia. From 2017 to 2019 he was also a member of the Security and Defense Subcommittee . In 2016, Forbes magazine ranked him among the 30 under 30 most influential young politicians in Europe.

Since his re-election in 2019 , he has been spokesman for the PD delegation in the EU Parliament, as well as a member of the Committee on Internal Market and Consumer Protection and delegate for relations with the Mashreq countries.
