Brassartshof

The Brassartshof ( Schöffenhof ; Hof auf dem Bongarten ) was a building in Arnoldsweiler , a district of Düren in North Rhine-Westphalia . Today the former rural women’s school is located at Ellener Str. 22 .

The "Hof auf dem Bongarten" farm was once one of the largest and oldest in Arnoldsweiler. Around 1400, the Schöffe zu Arnoldsweiler Henechen (Heinrich) von Merken zu Veldenstein is mentioned as the first court owner .

His daughter Bela married Johann Hoghs, the mayor of Arnoldsweiler in 1436 ; he took over the farm "Auf dem Bongarten". Hogh's daughter Bala, called the younger, married Heinrich von Birgel in 1462 , the illegitimate brother of Nyt von Birgel (Nyt (also "Nix", "Nÿcks") von Birgel (1436–1478)), Jülich hereditary marshal and bailiff of Nideggen.

Her son Johann Frambach von Birgel was a lay judge in Düren from 1498 and in Hochkirchen in 1505 . He inherited the property in Arnoldsweiler from his father. His son Daem von Birgel died as the owner of the farm "Auf dem Bongarten" in Düren in 1572. His marriages with Margarete von Esch and Girtrud von Jongen remained childless. After Daem's death, his second wife Girtrud married Vogt Hermann Nolden from Nörvenich . After Girtrud's death in 1585 an inheritance dispute over the farm "Auf den Bongarten" broke out between Johann Volles, known as Merzenich, and Peter Römer, a great-grandson of Johannes von Merken, the tenant farmer in Merken . As a result of the legal dispute, the farm "Auf dem Bongarten" was divided. The Römer part of the farm was administered by the half man Kleynmann. The part of Johann Volles, called Merzenich, came into the possession of the Brassart family from Valenciennes in 1602 as the marriage estate of Agatha Merzenich . The name of the Brassarts Hof estate is derived from this family .

The estate remained in the possession of the Bressarts until 1725, but they did not live in Arnoldsweiler. During this time the farm was administered by Wilhelm Bohlheim and after 1667 by Palmatius Bohlheim, Wilhelm's son. The latter had a half-timbered house built in 1711 (property of the Theo Zimmermann family from 1979). In 1723/27 the local distiller and beer brewer Johann Pütz acquired the farm from Councilor and Syndic Codone, who had only bought it a year earlier.

Johann Pütz was lay judge of the merzenich-Arnoldsweiler courts and held the Herrengeding in the old Brassartshof. This gave rise to the name Schaefershof (Schöffenhof), which the farm had for a long time. The farm probably remained in the possession of the Pütz family until 1772.

It is very likely that the farm was bought by Johann Schnitzler that year. His granddaughter Maria Katharina married Peter Koch from Kirchtroisdorf , who took over the farm around 1830. In his and his son Bertram's possession, the name Kochshof became established for the good.

With Bertram's marriage to the heiress of the "Römerhof", the fragments of the old Bongarten court were reunited. After this time, the courtyard was given its current appearance. In 1895, major renovations must have been made, so almost all barns and stables come from these years. You can still find the forged year 1895 on the street front of a stable building.

The farm was then divided again just two years later in 1897. In one part, a cooperative of the Franciscan Sisters of Salzkotten set up a country school for women, while the other part remained in the possession of the Koch family.
