The Brasseries de Bourbon is the only large brewery in Reunion . The name of the brewery comes from the former name of the French overseas department , which was "Bourbon". Heineken has been the majority owner of Brasseries de Bourbon since 1986 .

The brewery has been part of the history of Réunion for more than 50 years, as it shapes everyday life on the island in the Indian Ocean through the omnipresent advertising presence . The name of the beer produced is Bourbon, but is locally almost exclusively referred to and marketed as "Dodo" (named after the extinct bird Dodo ).

history

Gérard Avanzini, first master brewer of the Brasseries de Bourbon

The first attempts to brew high-quality beer on Réunion go back to 1960. A local entrepreneur named Vernon King Stevenson came up with the idea of starting a brewery because he had only been producing Coca-Cola since 1958 and was looking for product diversification. The brewery was finally built with the support of master brewer Gérard Avanzini and technical know-how from the German brewery group Brauhaase . The first beer was produced on June 9, 1963 and sold under the name "Dodo Pils" in 0.75 liter bottles. In 1970 the brewery decided to rename the beer to the name "Bourbon", which still exists today, but this name could not prevail. Even today, after more than 40 years, beer on Réunion is almost exclusively referred to as “La Dodo”.

Beer advertising in Cilaos

The brewery always kept the official name, but it is marketed under the Creole advertising slogan “La dodo lé la” (“The dodo is here”). Beer is ubiquitous and very popular on Réunion; the Maison de la Bière Dodo in Saint-Denis has had its own museum since 2005 . With the entry of the Heineken brewery group in 1986, the brewery was modernized with the aim of increasing sales. Heineken not only became majority owner of Brasseries de Bourbon, but also of Bourbon Distribution Service and Societe Reunionnaise des Eaux Gazeuses . In 1994 these three companies finally merged to form Groupe Brasseries de Bourbon and from then on not only produced beer, but also soft drinks and mineral water.

After technical innovations and expansion of production capacity in 1987 and 1994, another major investment was made to increase production in 2012 on the 50th anniversary of the company's founding. With a budget of 10.5 million euros, the German company Krones AG expanded the production facility and thus almost quadrupled its production capacity. In 2012, soft drinks production accounted for almost two thirds of total production.
