Bratislavská regionálna koľajová spoločnosť (BRKS) (German literally: Bratislava regional rail company ) is a railway company based in the Slovak capital, Bratislava .

history

BRKS is the first private railway company in Slovakia to operate rail passenger transport (SPNV) after 1945 . BRKS is a public-private partnership (PPP) that was founded by Bratislavský kraj (Bratislava region) and private companies (Euroconsultants sro, Prague) in 2003 to provide local rail transport services in this area.

From July 2003 BRKS operated passenger trains on the Záhorská Ves - Zohor route and on to Bratislava and from December 2003 between Rohožník and Zohor and on to Bratislava after ZSSK had ceased operations on these rural routes. There were also plans to run passenger trains from the Slovak capital to Malacky and Trnava . However, due to the Slovak railway laws, this became impossible from 2004.

Therefore, since August 2004 BRKS has also been operating freight trains (open access trains) within Slovakia ( Kúty - Bratislava - Dunajská Streda - Komárno ) and works in cross-border traffic with the foreign state railways ČD , MÁV and PKP Cargo as well as with the private railways Unipetrol Doprava (Czech Republic) , Central European Railway (Hungary), Wiener Lokalbahnen Cargo and Veolia Slovakia (Sloveo).

According to its own information, BRKS has been the leader among the three Slovakian private railways in terms of transport volumes since 2005. The main clients included Holcim (cement), Mittal (steel), PSA Trnava (cars), Duslo Šaľa as - Istrochem .

In February 2006, ČD acquired the first electric locomotives through a leasing contract .

Since April 2007 BRKS has had a branch at the eastern Slovakian border crossing Čierna nad Tisou - Chop (Ukraine), where the first private freight train from Ukraine to Slovakia ran in June 2007.
