Brewery around 1568

As brewers' pitch is defined as the yellowish brown, tasteless and odorless mass of earth tones, resin oils , rosin , pitch and paraffins , in the brewery for the sealing of wood barrels is used. Since the beer must not come into direct contact with the oak wood in order not to impair its taste, the kegs are lined or coated with brewer's pitch inside when brewing beer .

The best brewer's pitch was obtained in the 19th century from pure spruce resin from the common spruce of the Saxon Vogtland , which itself was exported to Denmark and Sweden .
