The Brauhaus place is a place in the old center of the small town Ruhland in Oberspreewald-Lausitz in the south of Brandenburg , whose name comes from a municipal-operated brewery originates from the 14th century. When it was built in 1397, the Germania Brewery Ruhland was founded and brewing continued here until 1949. There are three architectural monuments on three sides of the small square, a fourth was moved from here to the church square in 1939.

Location and layout

The Brauhausplatz is on Bahnhofstrasse with a short connection to the church square and market . Mittelstrasse , Wallstrasse and Brauhausgasse flow into the square . Opposite the confluence with Wallstraße there is a footpath to Marienstraße. Bahnhofstrasse from the listed building on the corner towards Markt has been converted into a pedestrian zone . The former premises and building of the brewery have access roads to Bahnhofstrasse and Marienstraße.

The square now also serves as a park area, which is, however, generously green through the planting of a sycamore maple and two pyramid oaks on the south side and a field maple between the park rows. Ground-covering shrubs complement the plantings.

history

The history of the square is closely linked to the history of the brewery. The Jacobi bakery was founded in 1890 in the corner building at Mittelstrasse 1.

Germania brewery

It is not known since when brewing rights existed for the citizens of Ruhland, but with the mention of city rights in 1397 in a document of Wenceslas IV of Bohemia , 55 house owners with brewing rights are also mentioned. They built a brewery for common use, which was jointly managed and operated in different shifts. 1356 was by Charles IV. Of the beer ban for the cities of Lausitz to: within one hour's walk no other beer could be brewed or sold.

The following brewery owners are later known by name: 1892 W. Bielzig, 1894 Jungrichter, 1945 August Fiedler, 1953 Rolf Schenker. The associated buildings at Bahnhofstrasse 24 and Brauhausplatz 1 had several previous buildings as a result of city fires and modernization. It was brewed until 1949, after which beer and from 1952/53 also until then produced non-alcoholic drinks were only bottled. The main supplier until the mid-1970s was the Landskron brewery from Görlitz, later also others. The operation was completely stopped after the political change because the distribution channels changed fundamentally.

Germania monument

In 1875 the Germania memorial was built here to commemorate the citizens of Ruhland who fell in the German War (1866) and the Franco-German War (1870/71). In 1939 the monument was moved to its current location between Kirchplatz and Bahnhofstraße for traffic reasons.

Younger story

Brauhausplatz 1 is now a beverage outlet (Getränke-Hoffmann).

In 1997 the Brauhausplatz was redesigned as part of the redevelopment area "Ruhlander Stadtkern" in a 4-month construction period for 600,000 DM according to the historical model.
