The first edition of the Braunschweiger Tageblatt appeared on September 1, 1865. The influential paper was “the first modern political daily newspaper with a local attitude” and was considered politically liberal and German national.

Its founder, publisher and editor was Friedrich Wagner (1834–1886). The newspaper was printed by Julius Krampe . Editors were u. a. Bernhard Abeken (1870–1874), Otto Elster , Otto Felsing , Friedrich Lange , Ernst Scherenberg (1865–1870) and Eugen Sierke . For the Tageblatt wrote u. a. Friedrich Lange , Ferdinand Spehr , Samuel Spier . Around 1889 the circulation was around 6,000 copies, on Mondays an "entertainment sheet" was enclosed, and between 1869 and 1893 an "extra supplement" appeared. From October 1866, the daily newspaper contained reports about the weather from the previous day, from which the weather forecasts still common today in the regional press developed later.

In 1866, just one year after the newspaper was founded, there was a public exchange of blows between the newspaper, in particular with its founder Wagner and the editor Scherenberg, in whose reporting the social democratic politician August Otto-Walster, who was active in Braunschweig , felt disparaged. Otto-Walster then published the pamphlet The Truthfulness of the Braunschweiger Tageblatt and my effectiveness in Nassau .

On January 1, 1898, the Braunschweiger Tageblatt was merged with the Braunschweiger Landeszeitung (1880–1936) and merged into it.
