Robert Jordan (born September 11, 1885 in Holzminden , † July 4, 1970 in Braunschweig ) was a German teacher , journalist and writer . He is considered to be one of the "most striking representatives of Braunschweig's cultural life" between 1920 and 1970.

Life

Jordan was born in Holzminden, but grew up in Braunschweig. Between 1909 and 1918 he first worked as a teacher in Mühlenberg im Solling , but then returned to Braunschweig to work as an editor there after the end of the Second World War for the Braunschweiger Zeitung . In addition, he worked as an art , music and theater critic and between 1929 and 1934 as a dramaturge at the Braunschweiger Landestheater . In 1934 he was dismissed for public abuse on the grounds of "not belonging to the party ".

Jordan was an excellent musician and draftsman and also wrote numerous school and youth books , including the series “The Appelhans” specially made for children. In total, he published over 40 works, including numerous on the history of the city of Braunschweig and historical people. His first work “Historical Arabesques” appeared in 1910. The Braunschweiger Landeszeitung published the series “Forays through Braunschweiger cultural life” and the “Braunschweiger Pfeffernuss” in the Braunschweiger Allgemeine Anzeiger .

Jordan was a member of the Kleiderseller , a sociable association around the writer Wilhelm Raabe , whom Jordan first met in 1907. In 1948, Jordan called for the tradition of clothing sellers to be maintained. He was also one of the new founders of the Braunschweig Literary Association , of which he was chairman and honorary member .

Honors

In 1947 Jordan was honored with the Raabe plaque from the city of Braunschweig. On his 70th birthday, on September 11, 1955, he was the first to receive the golden plaque of honor from the city of Braunschweig . In 1958 Robert Jordan was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class . A side street off Celler Straße has been named after him since 1978. A bronze plaque was put up in honor of his 100th birthday in Zeppelinstrasse 2, his last residential building in the eastern ring area of Braunschweig.
