Bread and Roses Award

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bread and Roses Award for Radical Publishing is a British literary award. It has been awarded annually since 2012 for "radical literature" - whereby this is understood as something that is socialist , anarchist , ecological , feminist or anti-racist - in other words, dedicated left literature. This award is the UK's only left wing literary award. The literature must be written by authors who mainly live in the UK or at least have been published in the UK. The award is endowed with 500 British pounds. The Bread and Roses Award is sponsored by the Alliance of Radical Booksellers and is not based on any foundation.

Bread and Roses is a phrase based on the 1912 Lawrence textile strike in Lawrence , Massachusetts . In the song, Bread and Roses , which commemorates the strike, the workers allegedly went on strike for "bread and also for roses".

The first award ceremony took place on Labor Day May 1, 2012 at the Bread and Roses Pub in Clapham , London .
