Owen Jones (journalist)
Owen Jones (born August 8, 1984 in Sheffield ) is a British journalist, author and activist on the political left . He is a regular columnist for The Guardian and New Statesman , and in the past for The Independent .
Life and work
Jones grew up in Stockport ( Greater Manchester ). His family had been shaped by socialism for several generations ; his grandfather was in the British Communist Party and his father was a union representative.
After leaving school, he studied history at the University College of Oxford University . He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 2005 and a Master of Studies (MSt) in US history in 2007. Before becoming a journalist, he worked as a union representative and assistant to Labor MP John McDonnell .
Jones initially worked as a columnist for The Independent and moved to The Guardian in March 2014 . He also has a regular column in New Statesman since 2015 . His contributions have also appeared in the Sunday Mirror , Le Monde diplomatique and smaller newspapers. As a political commentator, he appears frequently on English language television, including BBC News , Sky News , Channel 4 News and the BBC program Question Time .
Political classification
Jones writes from a left perspective. He advocates democratic socialism and is a member of the left-wing think tank National Advisory Panel for the Center for Labor and Social Studies .
In his 2011 book Chavs: The Demonization of the Working Class , Jones explores prejudice against the British working class and the use of the derogatory term “ Chav ”. The book garnered media attention and was praised for engaging a broader public engagement with classicism , and was one of the finalists for the Guardian First Book Award in 2011 .
Jones is a feminist . He is gay and campaigns against homophobia , transphobia and sexism in his journalistic work , also within the LGBT scene. On June 12, 2016, he left a discussion on the Orlando massacre on Sky News because he wanted to protest against the show host's downplaying the anti-gay violence of the massacre.
