The Breid Basin ( English ) is the eastern part of the Langnes Fjord on the Ingrid Christensen coast of the East Antarctic Princess Elisabeth Land . The bay is connected to the rest of the fjord by a strait .

Norwegian cartographers who mistakenly took it for a lake and named it Breidvatnet ( Norwegian for broad lake ) mapped it using aerial photographs from the Lars Christensen expedition in 1936/37 . Additional aerial photographs were taken during the US operation Highjump (1946-1947), a Soviet Antarctic expedition in 1956 and during campaigns by the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions in 1957 and 1958. The Antarctic Names Committee of Australia matched the Norwegian name with the actual one Conditions.
