The Breite Berg ( Polish Bazaltowa Góra ) is a characteristic mountain in the southeastern part of the Bober-Katzbach foothills ( Pogórze Kaczawskie , German also: Striegauer Berge ). The mountain is located near Striegau ( Strzegom ), Schweidnitz district .

geography

The mountain is an extinct shield volcano with a clearly defined peak. The hill is covered with deciduous forest of oak, mountain ash, service tree, linden and sycamore maple. In 2007 a nature trail was laid out, which leads from Poischwitz ( Paszowice ) to the Breiten Berg.

Culture

On the mountain there was a refuge of the Illyrian urn field culture of the Hallstatt period , which was probably destroyed after the Scythian invasion . Later there was a Slavic castle on the mountain that secured the way through the Landeshut Gate . This castle was probably destroyed when the Mongols marched before the battle of Wahlstatt , as there are Asian arrowheads. In the Second Silesian War , the mountain was involved in the Battle of Hohenfriedeberg .

In modern times, a large part of the mountain was removed by basalt mining. An observation tower was built on the summit in 1906.

Ascent

  • The red bars are marked for hiking from Bolkenhain ( Bolków ) to Goldberg ( Złotoryja )
  • Next to the tower above the quarry of the former basalt mine there is a vantage point, from which there is a panorama to the Haynau Plain ( Równina Chojnowska ), the Striegau Mountains, the Owl Mountains and the Stone Mountains ( Góry Kamienne ).
