The Breitling tetra (Curimatidae) are a family of Central and South American freshwater fish. Their distribution area extends from southern Costa Rica to northern Argentina , a little south of Buenos Aires . They also occur west of the Andes from the Río Atrato in northwestern Colombia to northwestern Peru . Most of the species live in the river basins of the Amazon and Orinoco .

features

Breitling tetra are 4 to 32 centimeters long. Your body can be fusiform or high-backed and flattened on the sides. In contrast to almost all other tetra species , the Curimatidae lack all of their jaw teeth. The only second group of tetras without teeth is the genus Anodus from the family of club tetra (Hemiodontidae).

ecology

Breitling tetra are very common and form a large proportion of the fish population in many rivers. Therefore they are important for the nutrition of predatory fish and other fish-eating animals and are also fished by humans. Breitling tetra feed on organic coatings, algae and detritus . Some species migrate to their spawning grounds in large schools.
