Although her mother was often ill during Brenda's childhood, she remained an active member of Chandler's town council .

Through her achievements in mathematics and science, she received an academic scholarship. She only studied two years at Brigham Young University (BYU) in Provo, Utah, and so waived her scholarship. In 1984 she left university without a degree, married Ted Novak and moved with him to California.

At the age of 29 she discovered writing for herself. She worked as a loan officer for a mortgage bank . While she was working her children were put to sleep by the day care workers with cough medicine and paracetamol . One day she found the medication in the baby bottle and released the caregivers. She could no longer trust a carer and gave up her job to look after her children. Since her husband's business was not going well, she decided to write a book to help the family financially. In 1999 her first book, Of Noble Birth , was published, a historical romance novel. She won several awards with her books and was on various bestseller lists.

She and her husband have five children and live in Sacramento . She is committed to diabetes research because her youngest son Thad suffers from it.
