features

butterfly

The wingspan of the moth is 35 to 44 millimeters. The forewings are elongated and narrow. Their top varies in different shades of brown. The upper area of the disk region is dark brown, on the inner edge a broad ocher-colored stripe stands out. The outer and inner transverse lines are strongly serrated, but indistinct. The blemishes are reduced to black points. A dark shadow can be seen below the very pointed apex . The conspicuously large hind wings are gray-brown without drawing. The proboscis of the moths is well developed. The very long palps are stretched out like a beak.

Caterpillar

Adult caterpillars are greenish in color. They are slim, 14-footed and show clearly separated segments. The secondary ridge lines and the side stripes are whitish to yellowish. The green head is dotted with black. Individual hairs protrude from the black point warts.

distribution and habitat

The pre-alpine beaked owl is distributed locally from the Iberian Peninsula through Central Europe in mountainous regions. To the east, the distribution area extends to China . In the Alps it rises to heights of 2000 meters. In the case of single finds in the north, the species is considered to be a random visitor. The animals are preferably to be found on the edges of forests, mountain slopes as well as in riverside and wetlands.

Way of life

The nocturnal moths fly in one generation between July and September, overwinter and reappear from April of the following year. They visit bait and artificial light sources . The food plant of the caterpillars that live in June and July is the great nettle ( Urtica dioica ), on which they live socially. They pupate between spun leaves.

Danger

The foothill beaked owl occurs locally and mostly sporadically in Germany in Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria and is classified in category 3 ("endangered") on the red list .
