Career

Abrey was brought to Chelsea by Ted Drake in 1955 at the age of 16 , but did not appear in competitive matches for the club's first team in the following years. Abrey earned extra income while at Chelsea behind the counter at Drake's betting shop in Clacton-on-Sea . While he had problems at Chelsea in the 1959/60 season, even playing in the reserve team, he played all five games in the United States in the International Soccer League for the New York Americans in the summer of 1960 . The international selection put together for the league under coach Albert Stubbins existed alongside the British playersAlf Sherwood , Les Locke , Roy Goulden , Mike Everitt and David Cliss also made up players from Hungary, Argentina, Poland and Czechoslovakia.

In 1961, his contract was not renewed by Chelsea and Abrey joined the fourth division Colchester United under coach Benny Fenton . In the course of the 1961/62 season , he played 38 league games in the middle position and, in addition to a league goal against eventual champions FC Millwall, also scored a goal in the FA Cup against Peterborough United , when his following goal in the last 15 minutes resulted in a 0-3 Backlog has been made up. Against the third division, Colchester was ultimately defeated in the second replay.

At the end of the season Colchester rose to his two top strikers Bobby Hunt (38 goals) and Martyn King (30 goals) as runner-up in the third division . A knee injury sustained in April 1962 only allowed Abrey to play in the League Cup at the end of September 1962 in the following season , and in April 1963 he decided to end his professional career for medical reasons. After his football career, Abrey worked in Hendon, first in a school, later as a beer coach and postman.
