Brian Freemantle

Brian Harry Freemantle (born June 10, 1936 in Southampton ) is a British author of espionage novels , which are characterized by harshness and realism .

For years Freemantle was a foreign correspondent for several respected British newspapers, including Moscow , which is reflected in some of his novels ( "Charlie Muffin and Russian Rose" , "The Button Man" ). In 1975, as part of the American escape from Vietnam , he organized the only British-initiated transport of Vietnamese orphans from Saigon, which was enclosed by the Viet Cong . He processed the experiences he made in the novel "Rules of Engagement" , which was published in German under the title "Flucht aus Vietnam" .

He began writing political thrillers in the early 1970s and has been a full-time writer since 1975. He had his big breakthrough in 1977 with the novel Charlie Muffin , in which the British agent of the same name appeared for the first time , who is not a smart Superman and an “ Oxbridge graduate”, but a rather shabby but tricky man from a humble background. He has appeared in 13 novels so far. In 1979 the first, with David Hemmings in the title role , was made into a film by Jack Gold (see Charlie Muffin ).

He also wrote non-fiction books about the KGB , CIA and international organized crime ( "The Octopus. Europe in the Grip of Organized Crime" ), which also often plays a role in his novels ( "The Laundryman" , "Monopoly" ).

Freemantle also published under the pseudonyms John Maxwell, Jonathan Evans, Richard Gant, Jack Winchester and Harry Asher, but most of the novels originally published under a pseudonym were published in Germany under his real name.
