Brian Newbould (born February 26, 1936 ) is a British composer, conductor and music researcher.

Life

Newbould was educated at Gravesend Grammar School. He worked for a time as a music critic for Scottish newspapers and for The Guardian . In 1965 he was appointed as a lecturer at the University of Leeds . Newbould achieved particular importance through his work on Franz Schubert . With his addition to the third movement of the symphony in B minor (Schubert) , he has also become known to a larger audience. The symphony in E major (Schubert) , completely drafted by Schubert but not written down in full score, is another important work by Newbould. In 1978 his elaboration of Schubert's sketch material for this symphony was performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra at the Cheltenham Festival . Newbould then added further sketches by Schubert - for the first time facsimile by Ernst Hilmar - and made them available for a performance version. Other composers Newbould studied extensively include Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , Johannes Brahms , Edward Elgar, and Maurice Ravel . In 2001 Newbould retired as professor at the University of Hull . From 1994 to 2002 Newbould was also chairman of the Schubert Institute (SIUK).
