Ernst Karl Hilmar (born September 20, 1938 in Graz ; † November 23, 2016 in Villach ) was an Austrian musicologist and librarian . He dealt in particular with the work of Franz Schubert , Johann Strauss (son) , Hugo Wolf and the Second Viennese School .

career

After studying musicology at the University of Graz and the Vienna University of Music (PhD: Graz 1962) Hilmar first went to Freiburg im Breisgau and then worked as a research assistant at the RISM headquarters in Kassel . In 1969 he moved to the music collection of the Vienna City and State Library , which was then headed by Fritz Racek (1911–1975). In 1975 he became his successor. In 1987 Hilmar received his habilitation at the University of Vienna with a compilation of his earlier Schubert publications ( Collected Studies on the Life and Work of Franz Schubert ).

In 1979 he founded the Society for the Promotion of Schubert Research , from which the Vienna International Franz Schubert Institute (IFSI) emerged in 1987 , in which he published the periodical Schubert durch die Brille from 1988 to 2003 . His Rororo Schubert monograph has also been translated into Japanese (Tokyo 2000) and Chinese (Beijing 2005). He also initiated the establishment of the Vienna Institute for Strauss Research (WISF) . A long-term collaboration was established with the music antiquarian and publisher Hans Schneider , who edited and sponsored the publications of the institutes founded by Hilmar. In 2003 Hilmar resigned voluntarily from the post of Secretary General of the IFSI, the IFSI had to be dissolved in April 2005.

In 1994 Hilmar had to leave the Vienna Library on suspicion of malversation , in 1997 the suspension was lifted again, and since 1998 he has been retired. He continued to work scientifically (often together with Margret Jestremski, among others). In 2010 Hilmar's role as head of the Vienna Library's music collection (1975–1994) was the subject of public prosecution investigations; the investigation was discontinued in December 2010.

Hilmar also published under the pseudonym "Karl E. Harpf-Harpfenstein".
