Sudan

Brian Steidle worked for seven months from January 2004 for the Joint Military Commission in the Sudanese Nuba Mountains on monitoring the ceasefire. In September 2004 he began his work as one of three US military observers for the African Union in Darfur . There he witnessed many crimes, but was not allowed to intervene, only to observe. After the end of his six-month contract, he returned to the USA and reported on his experiences in Darfur, including before a subcommittee and the Black Caucus of the US Congress , gave lectures and acted as an advisor to various non-governmental organizations . Steidle later returned to Chad , where many people from Darfur had fled to continue documenting the events and making them known. He wrote the book "The Devil Came on Horseback" (the title refers to the Janjawid , a militia). A documentary film “ The Death Riders of Darfur ” was also produced on Steidle's story. Steidle himself appears in the film and tells what he witnessed in Darfur and interviews survivors.

In order to be able to provide concrete help, Steidle helped his wife, Andi Scull Steidle, to start the organization Helping Other People Everywhere (HOPE). Most recently, he founded Steidle Corporation, which provides advice and investigation into human rights abuses, genocide and illicit trafficking.
