The Brisbane City Botanic Gardens are located in the southeastern peninsula of the Brisbane River , on which the central business district of Brisbane lies. The park is on Alice Street and George Street.

The Brisbane City Botanic Gardens were founded in 1855 and cover an area of approximately 20 acres. The park is bordered on one side by the Brisbane River and on the other side by Parliament House and the Gardens Point campus of the Queensland University of Technology . One of the distinctive features of the Brisbane City Botanic Gardens is a remarkable collection of cycads , palms , figs, and bamboo . Some of the older trees are the first of their kind to be transplanted in Australia . Numerous botanical rarities also grow in the park.

Due to its proximity to the river, the Botanic Gardens were flooded eight times between 1870 and 1974. Since many plants were removed in the process, the Brisbane City Council had another park, the Brisbane Botanic Gardens , created at the foot of Mount Coot-tha .

The park is open around the clock and the paths are illuminated at night.
