history

When the Queensland colony seceded from New South Wales in 1859 , the sessions of the newly established Parliament were temporarily held in the rooms of the Old Convict Barracks on Queen Street. These facilities had to be sufficient to begin with, as the Queensland government spent the funds it had on building the Government House . In 1863 a design for a new parliament building was selected as part of a competition. Construction finally began in 1864 . The French Renaissance style front on George Street was completed in 1868 . The colonnades were erected in 1878 and construction of the front on Alice Street began in 1887 . In 1889 the building was completed.
