Britânia SC
The Britânia Sport Club was a football club from Curitiba , the capital of the Brazilian state of Paraná . The club emerged on November 19, 1914 from a merger of "Tigers" and "Lions", Leão FC and Tigre FC . Britânia was named as a tribute to the country of origin of modern football. The club was the most successful in the state at the beginning of the 20th century and record champions until 1942.
In 1971 the club merged with CA Ferroviário and Palestra Itália FC , both of which are renowned institutions of Paraná football, to form the Colorado EC . The Colorado EC reunited with the EC Pinheiros in 1989 to form the Paraná Clube , which won seven other national championships by 2006 and thus carried the fame of the founding fathers of Britânia into a new millennium.
Britânia recently played its home games at the Estádio Paula Soares Neto in the Jardim Guabiratuba district, which held around 4,000 spectators. The stadium opened in 1943 with a game against Avaí FC - it was lost 4-1 - and was demolished in 1998.
Historical successes
In the second national championship of Paraná in 1916, Britânia lost in the final as a representative of the Associação Sportiva Paranaense (ASP) against Coritiba FC , founded in 1909 , which represented the Liga Sportiva Paranaense . The final only took place in January 1917 and Coritiba won 2-1. Britânia's Spanish midfielder Joaquim Martin was the ASP's top scorer with a whopping 14 goals in 12 games.
In 1918 Britânia became national champion for the first time in the tournament that was now organized for everyone by the ASP. Striker Joaquim Martin made another decisive contribution and scored 17 goals in the 10 games of the championship round - half of all Britânia's goals. Six more titles followed by 1923. This series of six championships in a row could only be discontinued by Coritiba FC in the 1970s. In 1928 the seventh and final championship of the great pioneer club followed.
