Peter Greiner (* 20th April 1939 in Rudolstadt / Thuringia; † 11. December 2019 in Boltersen ) was a German stage and radio play writer .

Life

Peter Greiner began studying chemistry in Freiburg in 1959. From 1963 he studied chemistry and mathematics in Hamburg for teaching at grammar schools. In 1966 he passed his state examination, but only worked as a teacher for a while. He has been a freelance writer since 1970. He made a living from doing odd jobs at times. In doing so, according to a self-assessment, he was “pretty much at the edge of society, was pretty broken. Standing on the sidelines then leads to solidarity between people who are broken. And through this solidarity I got my material. ”In 1977 he received a Suhrkamp scholarship. For a long time his pieces were considered an insider tip, but were initially rarely played because of their form and subject matter. In 1981 his play Kiez was performed at the Berlin Festival , and in the same year he received the renowned Mülheim Dramatist Prize . Greiner lives very withdrawn, he always refused to be photographed.

Working and reception

Greiner created a dozen plays within a decade. Most of them are about socially marginalized and underprivileged people, their lack of perspective and the inability to find their way around. Orfeus is the story of a boy who goes off track, becomes a criminal and stylizes himself as a freedom fighter in a police state. In the play Fast a Prolet an ensemble of run-down and burned-out people of all kinds plays in a pub. Greiner's people are all injured, damaged, have given up and dream of entering bourgeois society. The Beethoven Roll over Beethoven 's only a tyrant against the courtly etiquette of Vienna, even Mayakovsky in Lady Liljas Hauer has spread a hunted, one of only noise and voltage.

Greiner uses jargon and dialect in his plays, his images provoke puns and dramatic outbursts of temperament, and Die Zeit wrote in 1978 that Greiner's plays were not played enough and that there was a “subordinate fear of theaters of embarrassment”. At the end of the 1970s Greiner's theatrical works were still highly praised by national theater critics. He was “the showcase radical for a few years” , but his bulky texts, which sometimes seem like a “random jumble of notes” , have not caught on in the theater; Today other aesthetic forms determine contemporary drama, and Greiner has stopped writing plays.

Numerous radio plays were written parallel to his plays. Schwarzer Schnee was staged at Radio Bremen under the direction of Peter Michel Ladiges with Christian Brückner and Friedrich W. Greiner's most important work, Kiez , was created in 1975. This play has 45 scenes with almost as many sets. The text was published in 1976 by Suhrkamp in Spectaculum 25 and in 1977 in Theater heute , but it was not premiered until 1980 in Cologne. The Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg had previously announced a world premiere several times, but in the end did not dare to tackle the topic. In 1981 the play was performed at the Berlin Festival and received the “Mülheim Dramatist Prize”. It is about the story of a former seaman and current pimp who sends several women on the line. With one, however, he tries to start a civil life, but fails. Run down as a bum and hunted by former pals, he eventually seeks refuge in a safe prison cell. It is an "outsider romance and a highly realistic piece because it understands and loves its characters as 'heroes', but never withholds the misery of this heroic and outsider existence." The performances were in all national newspapers as well as by Hellmuth Karasek im Mirror discussed. Kiez was filmed in 1983 based on a script by Hans Eppendorfer with Katja Rupé and directed by Walter Bockmayer .
