Brita Malmer

Brita Ingrid Maria Malmer (born June 1, 1925 in Malmö ; † May 8, 2013 ) was a Swedish archaeologist .

The archaeologist specializing in the field of numismatics had at the 1966 Lund University habilitated . She was married to Mats P. Malmer (1921-2007), archeology professor at Stockholm University , since 1949 .

Since 1971 she has been head of the Royal Coin Cabinet in Stockholm , initially a department of the Statens Historiska Museum , which she achieved in 1975 as an independent museum . In 1979 she became the first holder of the Gunnar Ekström Professorship for Numismatics and Monetary History at Stockholm University , where her student Kenneth Jonsson followed her in 1992 . She was editor of the inventory volumes of the Viking Age Swedish treasure finds and founder of the series Commentationes de nummis saeculorum IX-XI in Suecia repertis. Nova series.

Malmer was the best-known specialist in early medieval coinage in Scandinavia and has had a major influence on Nordic medieval numismatics since the middle of the 20th century. She has received numerous awards for her work.
