description

The design was primarily based on the typical skyscraper in New York of the beginning of the 19th century, in which motifs from the neo-renaissance and neo-classical periods were used. There was a total of 326,500 square meters of space for rent.

history

The Broad Exchange Building was the tallest office building in Manhattan during its construction from 1900 to 1902 and also the one with the highest property value. Renowned architecture firm Clinton & Russel designed the building at a cost of approximately $ 3.25 million. As in other high-rise buildings in Manhattan, such as the American Surety Building or the Beaver Building , at the turn of the 19th century, new technologies were used in the Broad Building that made it possible to build higher structures, such as the use of steel frames and elevators. The Broad Exchange Building was one of the most representative buildings of the New York financial industry for a long time until it moved further north to Wall Street .

In 1997 the building was renovated and 347 luxury apartments were created. Here, however, a dispute arose with the monument protection authority, which saw the renovation and redesign as a severe interference with the historic building.
