Broadway is the name of a subway station owned by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) in the Boston borough of South Boston in the state of Massachusetts in the United States . It provides access to the line Red Line .
history
Broadway station opened on December 15, 1917. The underground station originally had three levels, which were connected by stairs and thus allowed a quick change between tram and underground. The upper two levels (street level and the upper tunnel) were reserved for trams, while the subway operated on the lowest level. Each of the three levels had two tracks and a central platform. The tram lines that stopped in the upper tunnel were replaced by buses in 1929, the tram lines that stopped above ground suffered the same fate in 1953. Since then, the structure has been a pure subway station.
In 2012, the MBTA began building an emergency training center in the station's old tram tunnel. The Department of Homeland Security provided $ 8.8 million in funding. The training equipment includes two Blue Line cars, one Green Line car and a bus. The first car of the Blue Line was lowered into the tunnel with a crane via the Foundry Street portal in September 2012 .
