Broadway Family (Original title: Broadway Bound ) is an American film that was directed in 1992 by Paul Bogart based on the play of the same name by the author Neil Simon . It combines elements from film drama and comedy. The first broadcast on US television was on March 23, 1992. After Brighton Beach Memoirs (1986) and Biloxi Blues (1988), the film is the conclusion of Simon's partly autobiographical trilogy.
action
Kate Jerome lives with her father, her husband Jack and their two sons Stanley and Eugene in a middle-class house on the outskirts of New York City . But family life is by no means characterized by harmony. Kate's days are filled with everyday chores and Jack spends most of his time in the office. When Kate learns that her husband is having an affair, she tells him to move out. The sons Stanley and Eugene dream of a career as a writer, which Father Jack dismisses as a juvenile spinning mill. To make matters worse, Kate's affluent sister, Blanche, comes to visit from Miami and reproaches her frail father for not moving to warm Florida.
When the success for Stan and Gene sets in and they also go their own way, the large family dining table becomes increasingly empty. The family quarrels are now over and Kate looks emotionally stable. To her great joy, Eugene gives her two granddaughters. Grandfather Ben no longer feels obliged to be a moral support to Kate with his presence and now decides to spend the rest of his life in Florida.
background
Jonathan Silverman, who plays Stan in the Broadway family , played Gene in the play of the same name (which incidentally won the Tony Award in 1986 ) and also in the first part of the television series.
Although the film was produced for television by ABC , it was shown in a number of British and Australian cinemas.
The cinema release in Germany was on December 17, 1992.
The miniseries is called Brighton Beach Memories . Part 1 of the trilogy runs on German television under the title My Secret Diary , Part 2 under the English original title Biloxi Blues .
criticism
The Broadway family considers the TV feature film to be a "pretty film adaptation of a great play".
"A dignified melancholy comedy as the third part of a cinematic autobiography that is only reasonably entertaining and only slightly touches its melancholy mood."
