Brockhaus is an internationally active, medium-sized group of companies with headquarters in Germany. The companies belonging to the group are currently in their fifth and sixth generation and are 100% family-owned. The main fields of activity are steel processing and plant and equipment construction . The group of companies owns the Brockhaus brand for industrial goods and services. There is a delimitation agreement with the Brockhaus encyclopedia of the same name , taking into account the various fields of activity.

In response to existing overcapacities, the production of sheet metal blanks was discontinued at the end of 2013.

Business areas

The companies in the group operate in three business areas. The steel and environment business areas are based in Plettenberg , North Rhine-Westphalia , the measurement technology business area is located in Lüdenscheid .

Steel business area

The Steel Business Area operates a cold rolling mill . In the cold rolling mill, hot-rolled strip steel is refined into cold strip for specific customer requirements. This steel is used, for example, for safety parts in the automotive industry, which must have special mechanical properties. The range of dimensions extends from the usual to extreme width-to-thickness ratios (for example 14 mm thickness for 30 mm width or 5 mm thickness for 14 mm width). These customers are active in various industries, such as the automotive industry, mechanical engineering , construction and precision engineering .

Environment

The environment division is divided into the areas of environmental technology and recycling . Environmental technology deals with the construction of systems for cleaning, conditioning and using water and gases. The added value begins in the project planning phase, continues through production to after-sales service. The products are used by mines , landfills , refineries and chemical parks, among others . The recycling business is the logistical service of adding metallic production waste from the steel and metal processing industry back to the raw material cycle. Buyers of scrap are foundries and steelworks .

Measurement technology business area

In the Metrology division, special devices for determining magnetic material properties are designed and built. Manufacturers of electrical sheet metal as well as transformer and generator builders need this measuring and testing technology to produce energy-efficient materials or components. The measuring devices are used in research and development, in incoming goods inspection , in quality assurance and in optimization in production. According to the company, it is the world market leader in the quality control of electrical steel.

Friedrich Brockhaus founded a "factory shop" with a few looms in Kückelheim in 1864 . The founder came from the family that launched the publishing house of the same name at the beginning of the 19th century.

Julius Brockhaus built a drop forge in Oesterau , Plettenberg in 1874 .

In 1909 cold rolling and a pipe drawing shop were set up . This was the beginning of the cold strip production that still exists today .

In 1947 all mechanical equipment in the cold rolling mill was dismantled at the instigation of the occupying powers.

In 1958 the Lennetal Eisenhandelsgesellschaft mbH was founded, which is now called Brockhaus Lennetal GmbH.

In 1964, Dr. Brockhaus Messtechnik GmbH & Co. KG in Düsseldorf by Dr. Jaques G. Brockhaus, father of Dirk E. Brockhaus.

In the years 2000 to 2001 the company Brockhaus Söhne GmbH & Co. KG and Kaltwalzwerk Brockhaus GmbH were sold, which at that time employed over 1,000 people and were owned by around 70 shareholders.

Dirk E. Brockhaus was the sole shareholder of the remaining companies from 2002 and only a short time later bought back two more works from the buyer. Brockhaus Stahl GmbH was re-established.

Caspar N. Brockhaus joined the group in 2009 as a representative of the 6th generation.

An extensive re-branding in 2010 put the Brockhaus brand name in the foreground and underlines the group's competencies in the steel, environment and measurement technology sectors. The group of companies is currently in the fifth and sixth generation owned by Dirk E. Brockhaus and Caspar N. Brockhaus.
