Brodequin is a death metal band from Knoxville , Tennessee ( USA ). The band name describes a medieval instrument of torture. The band's music is assigned to the subgenre of Brutal Death Metal . Thematically, Brodequin deals in the texts with the Middle Ages up to the 17th century and the torture methods of this time.

history

The band was founded in 1998 by the brothers Jamie (vocals, electric bass) and Michael Bailey (electric guitar) and drummer Chad Walls. All members had played in other music groups before, but did not feel comfortable there because they could not realize their musical ideas. After the founding, Brodequin recorded a demo , followed a little later by the recordings of the debut album Instruments of Torture , which was initially released in 2000 as a self-production. Over 1,000 copies of the album were sold in a short time, so that the album was released in 2001 in a second edition by Ablated Records. Because Brodequin wanted to gain complete control over publication and marketing, Michael Bailey founded the label Unmatched Brutality Records, on which all of the band's albums were released in the following years. First the second album Festivals of Death was released in 2001 , followed by the EP Prelude to Execution (2003). In the winter of 2003/2004, the recordings of the last studio album, Methods of Execution , were released in 2004 . In addition to Brodequin, Jamie Bailey ran the project Liturgy with ex-Disgorge singer Matti Way, which released an album in 2004. Jamie Bailey described the performance at Obscene Extreme in 2004 as the high point of the band's career . In the following period the band performed regularly at festivals such as the Maryland Deathfest. The performance at the Death Feast Open Air in Hünxe 2008 was canceled for personal reasons. in the course of the year the band broke up.

At the end of 2015 rumors about a reunion of the band, which Jamie Bailey neither denied nor wanted to confirm, intensified. In February 2016 it was announced that the band had been signed for Hellfest 2016.

style

The main influences of the band are bands like Disgorge , Broken Hope , Gorgasm , Deeds of Flesh or Napalm Death . The music, which is almost always underlaid with blast beats, is played very quickly, almost completely dispenses with guitar solos and offers heavily alienated vocals.

The lyrics are written by singer Jamie Bailey and deal with torture and executions in the Middle Ages. Bailey gets inspiration from reading historical books. The name of the band also referred to the topics: Brodequin is the name of a medieval torture device in which the victim's legs were constricted in a wooden frame and the leg bones were broken with the help of wedges. The most famous victim of this torture method was Urbain Grandier .
