Brossel was a Belgian manufacturer of commercial vehicles and engines for rail vehicles from Brussels . The company was founded in 1923 by the Brossel brothers.

Brossel produced trucks , omnibuses , trolleybuses and at times also small vans . The company took over the manufacturer Bovy in 1930 and the manufacturer Pipe in 1931 . From then on, the vans were marketed under the name Bovy-Pipe. From the 1930s to the end of production in 1969, Brossel was very successful in Belgium, especially as a manufacturer of public transport buses .

Brossel was taken over by British Leyland in 1968 , who gave up the brand name a year later. A few vehicles are still preserved today as veterans.

Between 1939 and 1952, Brossel supplied engines for four series of light diesel multiple units for the National Company of the Belgian Railways . The NMBS / SNCB series 551 was the first type equipped with Brossel engines; 56 units of the approximately 16 meter long railcar were produced. In the same year 6 vehicles of the NMBS / SNCB series 552 followed, which was significantly shorter with only 11 meters in length. Both series received a 127 kW diesel engine with mechanical power transmission . In 1942 50 railcars of the NMBS / SNCB series 553 with a length of 16 meters and 166 kW Brossel engines were delivered. After the end of World War II , this engine was also installed in the 20 railcars of the NMBS / SNCB series 554 built in 1952 . These railcars remained in use until the 1990s, but the Brossel engines were replaced with General Motors machines on all vehicles in this series in 1994 .
