Alexander Brott
Alexander Brott , CM , CQ ( Joël Brod , born March 14, 1915 in Montreal ; † April 1, 2005 ibid) was a Canadian composer , conductor , violinist and music teacher .
Life
Brott received his first violin lessons from Eugene Schneider and Alfred De Sève and appeared as a soloist in a vaudeville at the age of eleven . After studying at McGill University with Maurice Onderet and Douglas Clarke , he was a student of Sascha Jacobsen , Willem Willeke , Bernard Wagenaar and Albert Stoessel from 1934 to 1939 at the Juilliard School of Music .
Before and after studying at the Juilliard School , he was a member of the Montreal Orchestra , he also appeared on concert tours and on the radio as a soloist and formed the Montreal Trio with Edmond Trudel and Jean Belland . In the late 1930s he received awards as a chamber musician and composer.
From 1939 to 1985 Brott taught violin, orchestration and composition at McGill University, and later composition and music literature. He has been composer-in-residence here since 1974 . In 1939 Brott also founded the Orchester de chambre McGill . With the CBC Trio with John Newmark and Roland Leduc he made the first complete recording of the Beethoven trios for the CBC .
With the Montreal Orchestra in 1939 Brott played the world premiere of his symphonic poem Oracle , with which he established his reputation as a composer. From 1945 to 1958 he was concertmaster, and until 1961 he was also the conductor of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. 1948–1949 he toured Europe as a violinist and conductor, where he directed numerous world premieres of works by Canadian composers; later he also toured Europe with the McGill Chamber Orchestra, which he founded in 1945 . He submitted his composition War and Peace to the last Olympic art competitions held in London in 1948 in the orchestral music category .
Since the 1950s, Brott has focused on composition and conducting. He worked worldwide as a guest conductor and for the first time performed all of Bach's Brandenburg Concerts , Handel's Concerti grossi and Ralph Vaughan Williams ' Pastorale in Canada .
After all, Brott was artistic director of the "Kingston Symphony" from 1965 to 1981, and then until 1990 of the Kingston Pops Concerts . In 1985 he founded the Montreal Young Virtuosi , an orchestra of fifteen young instrumentalists, which he handed over to his son Boris Brott in 2000 .
Brott was married to the cellist Lotte Brott . His older son Boris became known as a conductor and violinist, his younger son Denis Brott as a cellist.
