Broughty Ferry ( Brochty in the regional dialect) is now a suburb on the eastern outskirts of Dundee in Scotland . It lies on the north bank of the Firth of Tay shortly before its transition into the North Sea .
The city began with Broughty Castle , which was built in 1496 and still stands on the small peninsula that protrudes into the inlet. The name probably comes from Gaelic and is originally called Bruach Tatha ( Bank of the Tay ). The part of the name Ferry refers to the function of the place as a landing stage for ferries across the Firth to Tayport on the southern bank.
