Browningia caineana is a species of the genus Browningia in the cactus family(Cactaceae).

description

Browningia caineana grows tree-shaped, is only branched from the base and reaches heights of growth of up to 6 meters. The long, cylindrical, gray-green shoots are somewhat flexible and clearly segmented. The individual segments are clearly tapered towards their tips. They are 30 to 40 centimeters long and have a diameter of 8 to 11 centimeters. There are 9 ribs that are slightly notched. The round, gray areoles on it are up to 3 centimeters apart. The thorns of the vegetative shoots are brown. The three to four central spines are there 4 to 7 centimeters, the 15 to 16 radial spines 0.8 to 4 centimeters long. The approximately 25 white to brown thorns of the flowering shoots are tufted, bristly and reach a length of 3 to 5 centimeters.

The more or less purple flowers are 3 to 5 inches long and covered with overlapping scales. The greenish yellow, spherical fruits are up to 3 centimeters long.

Distribution and systematics

Browningia caineana is common in the Bolivian departments of Cochabamba , Chuquisaca , Santa Cruz and Tarija and possibly in the lowlands of Paraguay . It was first described as Castellanosia caineana in 1951 by Martín Cárdenas . David Richard Hunt placed them in the genus Browningia in 1991 .
