Browningia candelaris is a species of the genus Browningia in the cactus family(Cactaceae). A Spanish common name is "Chuyachaqui".

Browningia candelaris grows tree-shaped and reaches heights of up to 6 meters. The unbranched trunk is heavily thorny and reaches a diameter of 50 centimeters. The crown consists of almost non-thorny, spread out to aspiring, cylindrical shoots . The roughly 50 low ribs are rounded. The areoles on it are close together. The thorns emerging from the areoles are very thin, yellowish brown to brownish black and up to 1.3 centimeters long. The flowering shoots are without thorns or have a few whitish bristles.

The tubular flowers are white and 8 to 12 inches long. The edible fruits are yellow and up to 7 centimeters long.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Browningia candelaris is distributed in northern Chile and southern Peru on the slopes of the Andes at altitudes of around 1800 to 2800 meters. It was first described as Cereus candelaris in 1833 by Franz Julius Ferdinand Meyen . Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose placed them in the genus Browningia in 1920 .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is called " Data Deficient (DD) ", i. H. with insufficient data.
