Bruce Shand

The Shand family received the coat of arms royally as early as the 17th century.

Bruce Middleton Hope Shand MC and bar (born January 22, 1917 in London , † June 11, 2006 in Stourpaine , Dorset ) was a British officer and war veteran . He became known to the general public as the father of Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall , the long-time lover and, since 2005, the second wife of Prince Charles .

Shand was the son of Philip Morton Shand (1888-1960) and Edith Marguerite Harrington (1893-1946), later known as Mrs. Charles Tippett. His parents divorced when he was three years old.

He joined the 12th Lancers Regiment in 1937 as a Second Lieutenant , served in France and North Africa during World War II , was wounded and taken prisoner of war. Shand received the Military Cross in 1940 and the Bar in 1942 . He was promoted to major in 1942 and retired from the British Army in 1947 . From 1974 to 1992 he was Deputy Lieutenant of East Sussex .

On January 2, 1946, he married Rosalind Maud Cubitt, daughter of Roland Calvert Cubitt, 3rd Baron Ashcombe , and Sonia Rosemary Keppel, a daughter of Alice Keppel . The daughters Camilla Rosemary (* 1947) and Sonia Annabel (* 1949) as well as son Mark Roland (1951-2014) emerged from the marriage.

After a long period of cancer , he died in 2006 at the age of 89 at his home in Stourpaine, Dorset.
