Bruno Gebhardt

Bruno Gebhardt (born October 9, 1858 in Krotoschin ( Province of Posen , Kingdom of Prussia), † February 13, 1905 in Berlin ) was a German historian who became known for the handbook of German history that he edited and co-authored .

Life

Bruno Gebhardt, who grew up in a Jewish family, went to school in Krotoschin and studied history and German in Breslau . There he received his doctorate in 1884 with Jakob Caro with the thesis Die Gravamina der Deutschen Nation against the Roman court . Since 1887 he was a teacher at the Städtische Realschule in Berlin, since 1899 with the title of professor. He lived in Berlin-Schöneberg in the house Frobenstrasse 32.

The Handbuch der Deutschen Geschichte published by him first appeared in two volumes in 1891, in the 2nd edition in 1901. After his death, the work was revised and expanded several times, most recently in the 10th edition (since 2001).

In 1903/04 , Gebhardt published the political writings of Wilhelm von Humboldt from 1802 to 1834 in three volumes on behalf of the Prussian Academy of Sciences and was given leave of absence from school service.
