The city is centrally located in Columbus County and borders directly south on the city of Whiteville . The airport Columbus County Municipal Airport is located about one kilometer south of the city. Brunswick is 1.1 km², all land.

According to the 2000 United States Census Bureau census, the city had 360 residents in 144 households, including 101 families. The population density was 331 people per km². Ethnically, the population was 55% African American , 42% White, and 3% Native American .
