Gross National Product is a song by Friedel Geratsch and Reinhard Baierle . The song, first published in 1978 under the title Now is Spit on Hands Again , became a number one hit in Germany , Austria and Switzerland in 1982 as the debut single by the German band Geier Sturzflug . This makes it one of the most successful pieces by Neue Deutsche Welle and remained the band's biggest hit.

Emergence

Spit in your hands again was created in 1977, when Friedel Geratsch was on the road with Reinhard Baierle as a street musician duo "Dicke Lippe". Another source mentions 1972 as the year of origin.

The acoustic version of the song was first released in 1978 on the sampler Die Zeitungslose - Die terrible time ... is soon over , a production of the Trikont sub-label Our Voice for the taz . A few months later it appeared as the first track on the Dicke Lippe album Jagdfieber , now under the title Brutto-Sozial-Produkt . (Also our voice , edition: 1000 copies.)

In 1982 Geratsch produced the title again with his new band Geier Sturzflug in the style of Neue Deutsche Welle. This version reached number 1 in the singles sales charts in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. In the same year the song was covered in France by Nanard as PNB (produit national brut).

reception

The record company Ariola had signed the band because of this title - it went well with the "turning point" at the time towards the black and yellow federal government in Germany. During the election campaign , the title was mostly not played on the radio, as the broadcasters feared that they would be accused of creating public opinion. One day after Helmut Kohl was elected Federal Chancellor, Geier Sturzflug appeared on television for the first time. The song ironically portrayed the work ethic of the Germans. The song was often misunderstood in the press. B. as "cynical ballad of the German work ethos" ( forward ), "the new gospel" ( Bunte ), "Mailied, which the trade unionists prefer not to hum" ( Die Welt ), or "party convention song of the CDU" ( Quick ) . Sometimes a defused version was played on the radio in which instead of “They amputated his last leg” it was euphemistic: “They operated on his right leg.” Although Dieter Thomas Heck refused to announce the song and Geier Sturzflug it on ZDF Hit parade instead of the original version ("... and on Wednesday the garbage disposal comes and fetches all the junk ...") with the alternative line of text "... and on Wednesday the garbage disposal comes and takes one down ..." sang, the band made it onto the pitch one of the music show and the top position in the German single charts . The band got a gold record for it. The single has been sold over 600,000 times to date.
