The synözisch , autözische Geneigtfrüchtige Birnmoos ( Bryum imbricatum ) belongs to a group of very similar Birnmoosen , all moist to wet locations preferable and includes, for part lime-loving species. These essentially include Bryum uliginosum , which has greenish leaf base cells, Bryum imbricatum , which has reddish leaf base cells , and Bryum algovicum , Bryum longisetum , Bryum intermedium , Bryum pallescens and Bryum creberrinum , which develop a clear 2-3- rowed leaf border and also reddish leaf base cells . Many of these mosses also occur together in the same locations. These cannot always be clearly determined when sterile.

Identifying features

Bryum imbricatum grows in dense, fresh green to brownish-red-green lawns. The upper leaves are heaped, enlarged, moist upright and dry, lying, ovate-lanceolate in shape and with entire margins. They gradually run into a long point. The leaf margins have a narrow, clearly separated border of 2 to 5 cells and are often clearly bent back. The lamina cells are about 40 to 60 µm long and 12 to 20 µm wide. The lamina cells of the leaf base are reddish in color. The leaf veins are clearly developed and often reddish in color. It can also emerge in the crested leaves. The reddish seta is 1.5 cm to 4 cm long and bears hanging, elongated egg-shaped capsules that produce spores with a diameter of 14 to 32 µm. A fully developed capsule maturity occurs in spring.

Occurrence

The inclined fruity pear moss colonizes alkaline, calcareous, light-rich, fresh to wet locations on sandy, loamy or humus-rich soil. It grows preferentially in sand dunes, on sandy edges of water, on ditches, in gravel and clay pits, in quarries, on walls and on the edge of peat excavations. The moss is not only widespread in large parts of Europe (but not often due to the location requirements), but also occurs in Southeast Asia, North Africa, parts of Australia and the circumpolar parts of America. In the Alps, it penetrates to the alpine level.
