Buatier de Kolta (born Joseph Buatier ; born November 18, 1847 in Caluire-et-Cuire near Lyon , France , † October 7, 1903 in New Orleans ) was a French magician and machine designer.

Life

Joseph Buatier was to become a priest according to the will of his father, a silk merchant in Lyon. When he was 21 he left the seminary and tried his hand at painting. During this time he met the Hungarian magician Julius Vidos de Kolta in Lyon . Both went on tour in Switzerland and Italy in 1870, with Buatier acting as managing director. This was followed by Spain, Germany, Russia and Holland. In 1873 Buatier invented the bird cage that disappeared without a cover. After separating from de Kolta, he went to England in 1875 and made guest appearances a. a. in the famous Egyptian Hall in London. In 1882 he went on a tour of Germany with the cities of Hamburg, Munich and Dresden. In 1885 he stayed in Paris and showed his latest work of art there, “Le Cocon”. In 1886 he appeared again in the Egyptian Hall in London with the Black Cabinet . In 1891 in Paris he showed his wife, disguised as a canary, disappearing from a bird cage. In the same year he went on an American tour. In 1894 and 1897 he made a guest appearance in Paris, where in 1897 he showed the disappearance of a 7 meter high ladder in a hall that stood on the Paris field of Mars as a new trick. In 1902 he showed his last greatest invention, a cube that grew uncovered before the eyes of the public, from which in the end his wife stepped out. In 1903, during his second American tour, he died suddenly in New Orleans.

To date, there are numerous illusions still in use that go back to Buatier's ideas and inventions, such as folding flowers, piercing a person with a sword, and others.
