The Buchhäger Psalter is a translation of the Book of Psalms from the Greek text of the Septuagint into German.

Orthodox tradition

This psalm translation was created in the German Orthodox Trinity Monastery Buchhagen in order to be able to perform the Liturgy of the Hours in German. Therefore, “the text has to accommodate singing, so it must be designed as a song from the start.” The book was published in print in 2008, the form of the texts had been worked out over 24 years and tested in the liturgy, until 1992 in the monastery apartment in Berlin . The author is Abbot Johannes (Pfeiffer), who consulted with professors and students from the Free University of Berlin, monks from Mount Athos in Greece and the Buchhagen monks on the translation from Greek into German.

It should be a psalter based on the model of the translations by Martin Luther and Romano Guardini , which should also convince linguistically when reading and meditating privately. In keeping with the so-called cult song in the Buchhagen monastery, the psalms were to be heard in German as “holy language”.

The Greek psalm text

In the German Bibles in use today, the psalms are translated from the original language, Hebrew . For all Orthodox churches, however , the Septuagint Psalter translated into Greek is authoritative for translations into the national language . (With the Septuagint German there has been a philologically accurate translation of the Greek Old Testament into German since 2009, but it has no poetic character.)

The Buchhäger Psalter wants to take into account not only the singability but also the mystical tradition of interpretation of the texts “according to the sacred tradition”. Gregorios Palamas is particularly emphasized among the orthodox authors who were used as a guide . As a result, the Buchhäger Psalter is a relatively free translation compared to the Septuagint German.

  • Luther Bible : I lie and sleep very peacefully; for you alone, Lord, help me, that I may live safely .
  • Standardized translation : In peace I lie down and sleep; for you alone, Lord, let me dwell without worry.
  • Septuagint German: In peace I will lie down and fall asleep in the same place, because you, Lord, founded my apartment on hope alone .
  • Buchhäger Psalter: So now I lie down in peace and sleep soundly / for you, O Lord, keep me well, rapt in a safe place .

Psalm 23 (22), 5b

  • Luther Bible: You anoint my head with oil and pour me full .
  • Unit translation: You have anointed my head with oil, my cup is overfull.
  • Septuagint German: You anointed my head with oil, and your cup made me drunk like the strongest (potion) .
  • Buchhäger Psalter: You anoint my head with oil / and give me the most precious, your intoxicating goblet .

Psalm 139 (138), 3

  • Luther Bible: I walk or lie, you are around me and see all my ways .
  • Single translation: Whether I go or rest, you measured it. You are familiar with all my ways.
  • Septuagint German: You found my path and my route, and you foresaw all my ways .
  • Buchhäger Psalter: You feel my trace and know my measure / you know all my paths in advance .

Additions

The book Haeger Psalter takes over the count of the Psalms and the Psalms headlines the Septuagint. According to the Orthodox tradition, the 150 psalms are divided into 20 cathisms , each of which is divided into three subsections. In brackets, each psalm is also given which service it belongs to.

The appendix contains explanations and models for singing the Psalms.

At the presentation of the Buchhäger Psalter at the Leipzig Book Fair 2009 there were three CDs with chants of the Psalms. The production of the recordings had been supported by former Thomaners .

reception

Marika C. Kuzma from the University of California, Berkeley published 35 sacred concertos for choir by Dmitry Bortniansky (Carus 4.111) at Carus-Verlag in 2008 , using the Buchhäger Psalter for the German translation of the psalm texts.

The publishing bookstore Manuscriptum , whose publishing program has a right-wing conservative and new right-wing orientation and publishes authors such as Björn Höcke , Rolf Peter Sieferle and Akif Pirinçci , dedicates a separate page to the monastery on its website and in this context also advertises the publications from Buchhagen. The Buchhäger Psalter was initially marketed by Manufactum through goods from monasteries . The originally green-alternative Manufactum founder Thomas Hoof took over the marketing of the Buchhäger Psalter for his publishing company Manuscriptum , the tendency of which is increasingly determined by new right-wing positions.
