The Manufactum GmbH (formerly Manufactum Hoof & Partner KG), based in Waltrop , North Rhine-Westphalia , is a retail company with mail order and stationary sales. It has been part of the Otto Group since 2008 .

history

Thomas Hoof was previously a state manager of the Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen party in North Rhine-Westphalia. In 1987 he went into business for himself and founded a mail order business for high-quality manufactured products called Manufactum . The name should not be confused with the North Rhine-Westphalian state prize Manufactum for handicrafts, which has been around for over 50 years. In 2007 the company achieved an annual turnover of around 75 million euros with over 400 employees. On January 1, 2008, the mail order company Heine , a subsidiary of the Otto Group, took over the outstanding shares in Manufactum Hoof & Partner KG for an estimated 20 million euros, after having held a stake in Manufactum since 1998 - most recently with 50 percent. In 2008 Manufactum also ended its book program, which was then published by Hoof as Manuscriptum Verlagbuchhandlung . Manufactum continued to take over individual non-fiction titles from the book program of the right-wing conservative publisher . As a result, this cooperation came under fire from journalists from Der Spiegel and Die Zeit . Due to a request from Zeit online , the then Manufactum managing director Manfred Ritter felt compelled to distance himself from Hoof in terms of content.

In the 2016 financial year, net sales amounted to 92 million euros. As a result of the takeover by Otto as the parent company, the company has been exempting from the obligation to disclose the annual financial statements since 2016 .

The range mainly includes household goods ; it also includes lighting fixtures , furniture, clothing, office supplies , groceries, books and garden accessories and the like. a. The company motto is "They still exist, the good things"; This advertising slogan describes the company's philosophy of selling high-quality and durable goods, some of which are still traditionally manufactured.

The Manufactum product catalog tries to advertise the quality of the products in a linguistically sophisticated and knowledgeable manner, sometimes with restrained humor and laconicity . In the Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazin (2005), Tobias Kniebe rated the catalog texts with a story about the product as decisive for the success of the company. Older catalog editions and the house news, which have meanwhile been published separately, have acquired "collector value" and are traded antiquarian on book portals. Several libraries have holdings of the annual catalogs.

The Manufactum Group also includes Manufactum Bread & Butter with shops in Berlin, Düsseldorf, Cologne, Munich, Waltrop, Frankfurt / M., Stuttgart and Bremen, good things from monasteries, the magazine with shops in Stuttgart, Bonn and Munich and the Gasthaus Lohnhalle in Waltrop as well as sales companies in Austria , Switzerland and Great Britain .

Manufactum's central warehouse is located in Dortmund-Wambel and is operated by Rhenus Logistik .

Department stores

In addition to the mail order business, Manufactum operates department stores in the old Waltrop mine , in the Alten Hof in Munich , in the Hamburg Chilehaus , in Stuttgart , in the Berlin House Hardenberg , in Düsseldorf , in the Cologne Disch-Haus , in the Opernturm in Frankfurt am Main , in Bremen in the Bremer Bank , in Vienna in the house of the Kontrollbank Am Hof , in Hanover , on the market in Bonn and in Münster in the Münster Arkaden.
