Wambel is the statistical district 33 and at the same time a district of the urban city of Dortmund . It is located in the eastern outskirts of the inner city. Wambel belongs to the Brackel district , borders the town of Brackel in the east and is 76  m above sea level. NHN . In the west Wambel borders on Körne , in the south on the Stadtkrone-Ost or Schüren and in the north on the district of Scharnhorst . In 2018 there were 7,792 inhabitants in Wambel.

The Dortmund Galopprennbahn is located south of the S-Bahn line 4 and separates the historic center of the village from the newer residential areas in Südwambel . There is a small municipal district cemetery on Breierspfad; Relics of the former Wambeler Totenhof are still preserved on the tunnel roof on Nussbaumweg. The Wambeler Hellweg runs through the center of the town, and the U 43 light rail line also runs over it. The B 236 and the B 236n (connection Schwerte - Lünen ) run through Wambel, or in the Wambel tunnel under Wambel. The B 1 forms the southern border Wambels. The tax offices Dortmund-Ost and Dortmund-Unna are within sight of the B1.

The first written mention of Wambel ( Wonomanhu ) can be found in the Werdener Urbar and dates to around 880.

Wambel was incorporated into Dortmund on April 1, 1918.

Sport in Wambel

In addition to the above-mentioned racecourse and the Dortmund racing club that resides there, there are various sports facilities in Wambel. Chess at SC Wambel 77, football, handball, gymnastics, karate, badminton and skiing (everything at Wambeler SV 1920 eV), as well as on the grounds of the golf course. The clubhouse of the diving club TSC Dortmund is also here. The sport of shooting can also be practiced in Wambel.

Churches

Wambel has three Christian churches. The Protestant Jakobus Church from 1908 on Wambeler Hellweg is located in the western part of Wambels. Together with the Matthew parish in the neighboring district of Körne , it has formed the Apostel district in the St. Reinoldi parish since 2007. The Catholic St. Meinolfus Church, which is part of the Dortmund-Mitte-Ost pastoral network, is centrally located in Rabenstrasse. Affiliated to the Catholic Church of St. Meinolfus is the DPSG St. Meinolfus Dortmund Wambel ( German Scout Association of St. George ), which is located there.

There is also a community center of the New Apostolic Church on Kirschbaumweg.

Schools and youth

The Comenius Primary School is in the center, the European Comprehensive School in the south and the Froebel Special School in the east. In the north there is now the Greek school in the former Wambel primary school.

There is an evangelical youth camp. The Protestant kindergarten Wambels is located in the same building. The Catholic kindergarten of the Catholic St. Meinolfus Parish is located in the vicinity of the primary school. There is also the municipal FABIDO day care center at Akazienstrasse; the parents' initiative Kinderhaus Dorfstr. moved away from Wambel and relocated on Geßlerstrasse. In Südwambel the AWO runs a day-care center on the avenue 'Auf dem Hohwart'.

Among other things, an episode of Balko was partly filmed in Wambel.
