As a branch of Dresdner Bank, Bremer Bank was a wholly owned subsidiary of Dresdner Bank with branches in Bremen in the districts of Mitte (next to the cathedral ), Neustadt , Utbremen and Vegesack . The branches in Bremerhaven were called Dresdner Bank.

The customer base and the employees have merged into Commerzbank since the acquisition of Dresdner Bank by Commerzbank AG.

In the meantime, according to a letter from the acquiring company, the Dresdner Bank brand has only been used in Dresden and the Bremer Bank brand has no longer been used since mid-2010 . However, there is a trademark protection until November 30, 2019. The picture of Mr. Meier has been removed and belongs to Commerzbank. At the place (see photo) there is now a door to the lower level of Manufactum.

Bremer Bank is used as the name of the listed building on Domshof. Commerzbank AG was represented there with a branch until mid-2015.

For reasons of the heritage tradition, the Bremer Bank lettering was made in copper on the gable of the building and was made in accordance with the heritage. Where previously there was Bremer Bank in green neon advertising above the entrance , Commerzbank is now in copper with the logo also in brown copper. The color of the copper fonts will adapt to the color of the building roofs due to weathering to green basic copper (II) carbonate.

History of the bank

In 1856, Bremer Bank was founded by Bremen merchants and shipowners with a significant contribution from Hermann Henrich Meier (the founder of North German Lloyd ). Bremer Discontokasse, founded in 1817, is the forerunner of Bremer Bank . Until the establishment of the Empire in 1871, the Bremer Bank was also a private central bank for Bremen.

The merger negotiations with Eugen Gutmann from Dresdner Bank were also conducted by Hermann Henrich Meier in 1895 . The merger was a profitable business for the Bremen merchants; the name Bremer Bank was retained in Bremen.

Even after Commerzbank took over Dresdner Bank in 2008, the name Bremer Bank was initially retained. In August 2010, Commerzbank put a sign next to the entrance area: Bremer Bank - Commerzbank AG branch . This sign was replaced at the beginning of 2012 by a company sign only with the name Commerzbank . The final renaming goes back to a decision by Commerzbank in March 2010.

History of the building

Domshof building No. 10–12 with a classical facade

From 1902 to 1904 the bank building on the Domshof was built in the neo-renaissance style according to plans by the architects Albert Dunkel and Diedrich Tölken . The old St. Petri orphanage stood here until 1902.

From 1978 to 1982, the building was expanded considerably by a new building in the northeast based on plans by Dietrich and Herrmann. The classicist Schmidt house from 1857, which stood next to the old bank building, was demolished and then only the white facade was reconstructed at its old location and enclosed by the new building. The original bank building was largely preserved, especially the entrance area on the side of the Domshof.
From 1980 to 1990 the building was also the seat of the Bremen Stock Exchange .

The old bank building on the corner of Domshof and Sandstrasse has been a listed building since 1994 and continues to represent the tradition of the Bremer Bank. For a few years the Commerzbank branch was temporarily housed here. The entrances in the other parts of the building ensemble are designed as official access to the offices or to other institutions. The Bremen branch of the Barmer Ersatzkasse is located behind the white facade. In
2016 a branch of Manufactum was opened in the counter hall . The now covered atrium has been the Markthalle Acht (eight because of the address Domshof 8) since 2016 .
