The bay of Vlora is surrounded on all sides by the mainland, only in the northwest does it open to the sea. It is surrounded by the lagoon of Narta in the north, separated by a narrow strip of land , the city of Vlora in the northeast, the foothills of the Ceraunic Mountains in the east, the small town of Orikum , the lagoon of Pashaliman and the Pashaliman naval base in the south and the Karaburun peninsula in the West. At the exit to the sea lies the uninhabited island of Sazan .

history

While the northern part is quite open to the sea, the 15 km long Karaburun peninsula in the southern part forms a deep, very well protected and natural bay. The southwestern end of the bay at the Pashaliman naval base has been used as a port for thousands of years. The Roman city there was called Oricum . The Ottomans called the port Pashaliman , Turkish for port of the pasha . During the Cold War it was temporarily a Soviet naval base - the only one in the Mediterranean region . The adjacent lagoon of Pashaliman is a significant wetland area.

A  strip about one nautical mile wide along parts of the coast of the Karaburun Peninsula and the Sazan Island is protected as the Karaburun-Sazan Marine National Park .

Numerous hotels have been built around Vlora and along the entire east coast to Orikum in recent years. The beaches attract numerous tourists in summer. The second largest port in Albania is located in Vlora. There are - controversial among environmentalists - Plans for the construction of oil - terminals and other industrial facilities on the waterfront.

Until 1992, a PVC factory was in operation on the coast near Vlora , which discharged considerable quantities of mercury and iron into the bay. According to a report published in January 2013, the proportion of these harmful substances in seawater is up to four times the amount permitted by the US Department of the Environment. So far nothing has been done by the authorities against this pollution.
