The Budvar Aréna is a multi-purpose hall in the Czech city of Budweis ( České Budějovice in Czech ). It is mainly used for ice hockey , but also for concerts . The hall, which was originally opened in 1946, is the home ground of the HC České Budějovice ice hockey club .

history

The originally open-air stadium in České Budějovice was built in 1946, making it the third stadium in Czechoslovakia after Prague and Bratislava to be equipped with an ice rink at that time. In the 1960s the stadium was covered. The Budvar Aréna was a venue for the 1966 men's volleyball world championship . In 2001 the renovation of the old hall began. The work was delayed, however, because the property near the Vltava was badly damaged in August 2002 by the destructive floods in Central Europe .

After the renovation work was completed, the hall was renamed Budvar Aréna after the local Budweiser Budvar brewery , which is also one of the sponsors of the Czech Extra League. Since the renovation, there is space for 6,421 spectators in the hall, 551 of which are standing and 5,870 seats. In addition to the main ice rink, there is another training ice rink that can accommodate a maximum of 200 spectators.

In April 2005 the U18 world ice hockey championship took place in the arena next to the hall in Pilsen .
